Greeted with the mouthwatering aroma of moist red velvet cupcakes topped with delicious butter cream frosting, you are led to a bakery that completely redefines dessert. It’s almost impossible not to consume everything in sight.lori-karmel

Lori Karmel, the owner of We Take The Cake, became inspired to buy this business while looking for a cake for son’s third birthday. After spending countless hours pacing down the aisles of numerous bakeries all over her area, Lori realized that there was one thing that all the cakes lacked: originality. “That was when I decided to take matters into my own hands,” Lori explains, “I was going to create my own unique cake.”

Although having no experience in design or baking, Karmel explains that her real passion is in sales and marketing. “Having a background in advertising, it has really helped to promote the business in so many ways,” Lori said. “I trust my instincts and know an opportunity when I see one. I saw this, and just had a good feeling about it.”

After buying the business in September 2002, the company was really struggling to survive. Barely making it, We Take The Cake pushed through. “After about a year and a half of perseverance, it was like winning the lottery. All of a sudden, we began to reap the benefits.”

Key Lime Bundt Cake - Chosen as one of Oprah's Favorite Things 2004!

After gaining much recognition on the Food Network and QVC, Lori Karmel received a phone call one morning that changed everything. The person on the other end was from HARPO Studios, telling her We Take The Cake’s Key Lime Bundt cake was featured on Oprah’s favorite things of 2004. “I compare it to the happiness that I felt the day my son was born,” Lori explains, “It was such a mind-blowing experience.”

Little did Lori know what was about to happen. After being mentioned on Oprah, so much traffic was directed to her website that the server crashed! This caused all of the other servers owned by the company that her site was registered with to crash as well. This dilemma caused their site to be down an entire season. However, this didn’t stop people from wanting their cakes. “We became flooded with phone calls, our holiday orders were compounded with Oprah’s and our voicemail would fill up every 45 seconds, we only had three phone lines.”

Chosen as the best mail order cake by In Style Magazine, We Take The Cake’s hard work is illuminated through the very originality that made their popularity spread like wildfire. Continuously gaining recognition for inventiveness and meticulousness, Lori tells us “believing in the product is all you need for success.”
