Pretty Is as Pretty Does

What girl doesn’t love to look and feel good? Usually, looking good and feeling good is directly correlated. There is nothing better then having a long relaxing facial, freshly plucked eyebrows, the perfect color eye shadow, and all around beauty bliss. If you haven’t had one or any of these girly indulgences recently then now’s the time to do something about it. Rachelle Hagenauer is the expert/owner of Cosmetan who wants to make you feel good and look GREAT!

When did you decide to open your own company?

RH: We decided to open Cosmetan 8 years ago. It was a dream of mine to be able to open and run my own spa.

What prepared you to start your company?

RH: My preparation began when I first started working as a makeup artist at Cosmix School of makeup artistry. The connection I made with the school and my customers was undeniable. I knew then that I wanted to make more of myself and my talents. My drive to be a successful artist and business was what truly prepared me to open Cosmetan.

How are you trying to improve as a business owner?

RH: I think with time and experience you will always improve as a business owner. As the years have gone by I have learned to work smarter while not forcing myself to work harder. We have grown as a business out of the conventional “spa” stereotype and now offer an array of services that encompass a total body experience.

When choosing the location for your shop what were the determining factors?

RH: In my eyes, location is vital to the success of our business; as well as keeping your overhead as low as possible.

Before you opened your shop, how did you respond to any negativity regarding the risks or other factors that would go into opening a shop like yours?

RH: It is hard to overcome the doubts placed on you by others. But I used all the criticism and negativity to feed my drive, work harder, and in the end prove all the doubters wrong.

In detail describe your company, including your services.

RH: Cosmetan is a one-stop beauty shop. We wanted to create a place where you could leave feeling like a new woman.  The Cosme- stands for cosmetics. We offer everything from make up lessons to the latest trends in airbrush makeup. We also have a professional skin care center. Offering customized rejuvenating facials and body treatments.  The Tan – is for our tanning sector. We offer high-pressure tanning beds as well as state of the art spray tanning. I have a passion for eyebrows and their care. I specialize in brow shaping best suited for each and every individual. This past January we started offering hair and nails. Our customers have always asked for us to provide such services for them; and it was the ideal way to utilize the space of our spa.

How did you first get the word out?

RH: We started promoting ourselves in local magazines and different town events. As well we were fortunate enough to be invited to the Today in South Florida show on Channel 6 a number of times. But most importantly we would have to say our clients are the most effective form of getting the word out. By treating them with the respect they deserve they gladly spread their own individual experience of our Spa to their friends and family.

How do you get the word out now?

RH: As of now we do not advertise as much as we once did, because we no longer have to. We offer weekly specials to our clientele and successful use a referral system.

What would you say a person needs to have or do in order to have a business run successfully and smoothly?

RH: Patience is a virtue. It takes endless hours of work and dedication to be successful. And just know that there will be some days you want to quit and days that you wished never ended. It is a long road full of ups and downs; but the end result is always worth it.

Excluding rent how much money would a person need to start a similar company to yours?

RH: Around $150,000… it goes a lot quicker than you could ever imagine.

What would a person need to have in place before taking such a big step?

RH: A strong family backing is so important. Family support will help you through the good times and the bad. And of course, money doesn’t hurt.

What can we expect from your company within the next five years.

RH: We are focusing on new wave techniques and procedures for both our makeup and skin care. A natural holistic way of keeping you looking happy, healthy, and hot!

What do you love the most about having your own company.

RH: I love that I can take a 2-hour lunch and not get fired. Just kidding. When you are the owner you never eat lunch. It is my baby and I have loved watching it grow over the past 8 years.

As a leader what has been the most important lesson learned?

RH: The customer is always right!

Give us 5 amazing tips as a business owner

RH: – Look your best at all times. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
– Keep your word. If you have an appointment with a client, do not be late.
– Be honest and up front. People will respect you more for it.
– It is not what you say but how you say it.
– You’re a person too, so make sure to give yourself the time you deserve.
